Palmetto Bug vs. Cockroach: A South Florida Guide

In South Florida, 'palmetto bug' is the polite local name for the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) — the big, reddish-brown, 1.5-inch roach that wanders in from mulch beds, palm crowns and sewer lines. Technically it's a cockroach, but calling it a palmetto bug feels less alarming when one flies at your porch light.

The confusion starts because 'cockroach' also covers very different species — most importantly the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). German roaches are small (½ inch), tan, breed indoors every 21 days, and love kitchens and bathrooms. See one during the day and you almost certainly have hundreds hiding.

Identification cheat sheet. Palmetto bugs / American roaches: big, reddish-brown, single sightings, come from outside, usually one at a time. German cockroaches: small, light tan with two dark stripes behind the head, seen indoors near food and moisture, multiplying fast. Australian and smokybrown roaches also show up in Boca Raton — treat them like palmetto bugs.

Why the difference matters. Palmetto bugs are an exterior-pressure problem: seal entry points, treat the perimeter, clear mulch and palm debris away from the foundation, and put granular bait in landscape beds. German roaches are an interior sanitation and baiting problem: gel baits behind appliances, insect growth regulators, monitors, and aggressive cleanup of grease and food debris. Fogging or general sprays inside the home push German roaches deeper into walls and make eradication harder.

Boca Raton reality check. Our humidity, sandy soil and lush landscaping mean palmetto bugs are basically part of the ecosystem — you can't eliminate them from the yard, but you can keep them out of the house with monthly exterior treatment and exclusion work. German roaches are almost always brought in on grocery bags, used appliances or cardboard boxes, and one professional treatment cycle usually wipes them out.
